A miniature donkey is a gentle, affectionate and remarkably long-lived companion — thirty years or more — so taking one on is a multi-decade commitment. Deeply social, they bond intensely with a companion (ideally another donkey) and can grieve and decline if left alone, so they should never be kept singly. They need secure pasture, safe fencing, and a dry shelter, because unlike horses their coats are not waterproof and they must be able to get out of rain and cold. The crucial thing to understand is that donkeys are desert animals with an efficient metabolism built for poor forage — they are not small horses. Rich grass and too much feed quickly cause obesity and laminitis (a crippling foot disease), so they thrive on limited grazing, barley straw or low-sugar hay, and strictly rationed treats. A stressed or off-feed overweight donkey can also develop hyperlipaemia, a dangerous fat-metabolism crisis. Routine care is equine care: a farrier to trim the hooves every six to ten weeks, regular dental floating, vaccinations and worming (including lungworm if kept near horses). Because donkeys are stoic and hide pain, watch closely for subtle changes in appetite, posture or droppings, and keep an equine vet who knows donkeys involved.
