The Miniature Zebu is a naturally small humped cattle breed (Bos indicus) originating in South Asia, and is considered one of the oldest cattle breeds in the world rather than a modern miniaturisation. Standing under about 1.05 m at the shoulder and weighing 90-160 kg, with the characteristic shoulder hump and loose dewlap, it lives 12-20 years and has become a popular hobby-farm and pet animal, prized for its small size, heat tolerance and gentle nature. Zebu are herd animals and need bovine company; a single zebu will be stressed and lonely. Well-socialised, bottle-raised animals become remarkably tame and affectionate, following their keepers and enjoying being scratched, though they are still strong cattle that need respectful handling and secure fencing. They are efficient grazers that do well on good pasture and grass hay with mineral supplementation and only limited grain, and being tropical in origin they tolerate heat well but need shelter from cold and wet. Routine care follows standard cattle husbandry — hoof trimming, parasite control, vaccinations and, for bulls, consideration of dehorning or castration — guided by a large-animal vet. With a companion, adequate pasture, shelter and basic bovine care, a miniature zebu is a hardy, long-lived and charmingly friendly small cow.
