Stick insects are among the easiest and most captivating of invertebrate pets, perfect for a first-time insect keeper, and their needs are simple but specific. The most important detail is the height of the enclosure: it must be at least three times the insect's body length, because they moult by hanging upside down and shedding their skin downward — too little height means a failed, deforming or fatal moult. A mesh or tall glass enclosure with gentle daily misting for humidity does the job. Feeding is a matter of the right fresh leaves. Common species eat bramble (blackberry), ivy or oak, offered as fresh cuttings kept in water and changed regularly; always confirm which plant your particular species eats. Keep the enclosure lightly humid but well-ventilated to avoid mould. Handle rarely and very gently, as legs can be shed if a stick insect is grabbed or startled, and support it from below. One responsibility stands out: many popular species are parthenogenetic, meaning lone females lay fertile eggs and can multiply rapidly, so never release them or their eggs outdoors where they could become invasive. With correct height, humidity and food, these gentle twigs make a rewarding, low-cost introduction to keeping insects.
