The Affenpinscher — the 'monkey terrier', with its shaggy, Ewok-like face — is a tiny, confident, endlessly amusing dog that takes itself very seriously, which only makes it funnier. Bold, curious and terrier-like despite its toy size, it was bred to catch vermin and retains a busy, mischievous, fearless streak. It bonds closely and is loyal and affectionate with its family, but its stubborn, independent nature means training needs patience, humour and consistent positive methods, plus early socialisation to keep its confidence from tipping into feistiness. Its exercise needs are modest, but it enjoys play and can be surprisingly athletic. The harsh, wiry coat needs regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping to keep its shaggy texture, with attention to the face. As a small, slightly flat-faced breed, the Affenpinscher can be a little heat-sensitive, so avoid over-exertion in warmth. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens, and watch for patellar luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes hip disease, heart conditions, hip dysplasia, and dental disease in its small mouth. Handle it gently, keep up dental care, give it patient training and companionship, and this comical, brave little monkey-dog will be a devoted companion for twelve to fifteen years.
