๐ Care guide
The Argentine black-and-white tegu ranges across the grasslands and forests of central South America, reaching 1.2-1.4 m and 3-7 kg, with males larger than females, and living 15-20 years. Highly intelligent and, unusually for a reptile, partly warm-blooded during breeding season, tegus are known for becoming remarkably docile and responsive with regular handling. They also brumate through cooler months. Adults require a very large, floor-focused enclosure of at least 240x120 cm with a deep substrate for burrowing, a large water tub, and a sturdy hide. Provide a hot basking spot of 40-45 C, a strong UVB source, and moderate humidity around 60-80%. Feed a varied omnivorous diet of insects, whole prey like rodents and chicks, eggs, lean meats, and some fruit, managing portions to prevent obesity. With consistent, calm interaction from a young age, tegus become among the most tractable of large lizards.
