It begins life as a canary-yellow juvenile and repaints itself powder blue as it matures, keeping a yellow scalpel at the tail. Watching that transformation happen in a tank takes about a year.

๐ Care guide
The Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) lives in the tropical western Atlantic from Florida through the Caribbean to Brazil and grows to about 25 to 30 cm. Its lifetime colour change is dramatic: bright yellow juveniles become blue as sub-adults, often passing through a blue-bodied, yellow-tailed intermediate stage before settling into deep powder blue with fine darker lines. It needs 450 litres or more with strong flow and long open swimming lanes, at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4. It is a committed herbivore, so dried algae sheets daily plus spirulina pellets are essential and a protein-heavy diet will cause head and lateral line erosion over time. It is hardy for a tang and reef safe, but the adult size is the honest constraint: a fish bought at 6 cm will not stay that way, and the yellow juvenile in the shop is a growing 30 cm adult. Quarantine before adding.
