๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Banded Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia trifasciata) comes from streams and billabongs across northern Australia and reaches about 10 to 12 cm. Its defining feature is a strong dark stripe running the length of the body, but the surrounding colour varies dramatically between isolated populations, so fish are usually traded under their river of origin, such as Goyder River or Blyth River. A group of six or more needs a tank of 200 litres or more at 22-28C with a pH of 7.0 to 8.0 and medium to hard water, plus open swimming length and a secure lid. Feed quality flake, pellets and regular live or frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp; a varied diet directly drives colour development. It is hardy, long-lived and peaceful, and a good rainbowfish for a first large community tank. As with the whole family, males take one to two years to reach full colour, so shop juveniles look far duller than the adult fish.
