The budgerigar is small, cheerful and famously easy to love, but it is still a flock parrot with real needs. It should be kept as a bonded pair or given hours of daily interaction, in a cage wide enough to fly across (width matters more than height), with a rotation of toys, ladders and foraging puzzles to keep its busy mind occupied. Out-of-cage time in a bird-safe room lets it exercise properly. Diet is where most budgies are quietly harmed: an all-seed diet is the leading cause of early death, driving obesity, fatty liver disease and lipomas. A good budgie eats mostly formulated pellets plus fresh vegetables and leafy greens, with seed as a small part, and a cuttlebone for calcium and iodine. Budgies have a delicate respiratory system that makes them exquisitely sensitive to airborne toxins — overheated non-stick (PTFE/Teflon) cookware, aerosols, scented candles and smoke can kill them quickly, so keep the air clean. Watch for the tumours the breed is prone to, scaly-face mite, and breathing changes, provide a good diet and companionship, and a budgie will be a bright, chattering companion for five to ten years or more.
