The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a powerful, intelligent working breed developed to herd cattle and hunt wild hogs in the swamps of Louisiana. It is fiercely loyal and protective of its family, forming intense bonds, while being naturally wary and territorial with strangers. This is a serious, high-drive dog with a strong will — devoted and affectionate with its people, but not a breed for inexperienced or inactive owners. Catahoulas need a great deal of daily exercise and mental work; they are athletes bred for demanding jobs and become destructive, restless or difficult if under-stimulated. Running, hiking, herding, training and problem-solving games all suit them. They are smart and independent, sometimes dominant, so early socialization and firm, fair, consistent training from puppyhood are essential to raise a stable, well-mannered adult. The short, dense coat is easy to care for, needing only weekly brushing. The merle coloring that gives the breed its striking looks also carries a risk of deafness and eye problems, especially in double-merle dogs, so responsible breeding matters; hip dysplasia and thyroid issues can also occur. Given a job, structure and companionship, the Catahoula is a loyal, capable and impressive partner.
