The American Cocker Spaniel is a merry, gentle, affectionate little sporting dog with melting eyes and a famously sweet nature — it loves everyone and thrives on being part of the family. Moderately energetic, it enjoys daily walks and play but is happy to settle down at home, making it a versatile companion. It is sensitive and eager to please, responding beautifully to gentle, positive training, though early socialisation matters as the breed can be a little timid or, in poorly bred lines, over-reactive. The long, silky, feathered coat is the big commitment: it mats easily and needs brushing several times a week plus professional grooming every few weeks. Those glamorous drop ears are the breed's signature health challenge — they trap moisture and are highly prone to chronic ear infections, so regular cleaning and drying are essential. The prominent eyes are prone to problems including cataracts, glaucoma and 'cherry eye', so monitor them, and screen for hip dysplasia. Keep up meticulous ear and eye care, regular grooming and a lean weight, and an American Cocker Spaniel will be a joyful, devoted companion for ten to fourteen years.
