The Denison Barb or Roseline Shark (Sahyadria denisonii) comes from fast rivers in the Western Ghats of southern India and reaches about 11 to 15 cm. Heavy collection for the aquarium trade contributed to a sharp decline in its wild population, and it is assessed as endangered, so tank-bred stock, which is now widely available, is the responsible choice and worth asking about specifically. A group of six or more needs 300 litres or more, and a long tank rather than a tall one, at 18-25C, cooler than most tropical fish, with pH 6.5 to 7.8, strong flow and high oxygen. Feed quality flake and pellets with frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp, plus vegetable content. It is peaceful but genuinely fast and needs distance to swim, and a group kept in a small tank becomes stressed and nippy. It also jumps, so a secure lid is required. Given the right space it is one of the most striking large community fish available, and it shoals impressively when kept in real numbers.
