Unrelated to the Sphynx despite the shared bald look, the Donskoy arose in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don from a dominant hairlessness gene. It is a warm, wrinkled, intensely affectionate cat that craves contact and will burrow under blankets or drape across your shoulders. Smart and playful, Donskoys enjoy interactive toys, gentle games and the company of other pets, but their real need is closeness — they do not cope well with isolation. A companion animal and plenty of lap time keep them content and secure. Hairless skin is high-maintenance: it secretes oils that require regular gentle bathing or wiping, sun exposure must be limited, and the cat needs warmth in winter. Keep ears clean, protect against cold, and monitor dental and respiratory health, as some Donskoys have fragile teeth and sensitive airways.
