The Estrela Mountain Dog is Portugal's oldest breed, developed in the Serra da Estrela mountains to guard flocks against wolves in hard terrain and harsh weather. It comes in long and short coats, both with a thick undercoat, and it is built for endurance and strength rather than speed, with the characteristic dark mask and hooked tail of the type. Like other livestock guardians it was bred to think independently, and that shapes everything. An Estrela is deeply devoted to its own family, watchful and naturally suspicious of strangers, and it will act on its own judgement about who belongs. It needs extensive early socialisation, patient consistent training and, above all, secure fencing and controlled introductions; it is not a dog to leave loose with unfamiliar visitors. With its own household, including children it has grown up with, it is affectionate and steady. Exercise means daily walks and space rather than sport, around an hour a day, and it prefers cool conditions given the coat. Grooming is brushing twice a week and daily during the heavy seasonal moult. Health screening should cover hips and elbows, both of which occur in the breed, and the Estrela has a documented predisposition to dilated cardiomyopathy, so a breeder should be screening hearts and be willing to discuss the line's history. Feed measured meals to reduce bloat risk and manage puppy growth carefully to protect developing joints.
