📖 Care guide

Ferrets are domesticated polecats kept for at least 2,000 years, and they are obligate carnivores and true companion animals rather than caged pets — a ferret needs several hours of supervised out-of-cage play every day. They are intensely playful (the sideways "weasel war dance" means pure joy), highly social (keep two or more where possible), and sleep 16–18 hours between bursts of chaos. Adults weigh 0.7–2 kg and live 6–10 years. Ferret-proof ruthlessly: they squeeze through 4 cm gaps, open cupboards, and swallow soft rubber (a common cause of fatal blockages). Provide a large multi-level cage for downtime with hammocks and a litter tray, but the real housing is a ferret-safe room. Most pet ferrets are neutered and de-scented young; even so a light musk is natural. Diet is the make-or-break: as obligate carnivores they need high animal protein and fat and cannot use carbohydrates or plant fibre — a high-quality ferret or kitten kibble, or a properly formulated raw/whole-prey diet, never rabbit-style pellets. Health watch-list is significant: adrenal disease and insulinoma (pancreatic tumours) are common in later life, along with dental disease and blockages — annual vet checks and vaccination (where required) matter a lot.
