๐ Care guide
The firemouth cichlid (Thorichthys meeki) comes from the slow rivers, lagoons and cenotes of the Yucatรกn Peninsula in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, within the Usumacinta basin. It reaches about 15 cm and lives 8โ10 years, sometimes longer. Its name comes from the fiery red throat and gill covers males flare to intimidate rivals without actually fighting. Firemouths need a tank of 210 litres or more at 23โ28ยฐC with a pH of 6.5โ8.0. Provide a sandy substrate they can dig, flat stones and caves for spawning, and robust plants or none, since they may rearrange the tank. Outside breeding they are relatively peaceful, but a spawning pair becomes territorial and defensive. They are omnivores that eat quality cichlid pellets, frozen and live foods, and sift the sand for morsels. Fascinating parents, pairs excavate pits and diligently guard their fry. Generally hardy, their main risks are hole-in-the-head disease, ich and obesity from overfeeding; clean water, a varied diet and enough space keep these characterful cichlids healthy.
