๐Ÿ“– Care guide

One of the world's oldest and most distinctive breeds, the Norwegian Fjord has changed little since the Vikings and always wears a dun coat with primitive markings โ€” a dark dorsal stripe running through a stiff, upright mane that is traditionally trimmed to stand up and show its dark-and-light banding. Compact, muscular and immensely strong for its size, it is a true dual-purpose draft-and-riding horse. Renowned for a calm, gentle, patient and willing temperament, the Fjord is a wonderful family and beginner horse that also drives, packs and does light farm work tirelessly. Its good sense and sturdy build make it forgiving and dependable, though like all horses it needs regular work and turnout to stay fit. The thick coat and characteristic mane need regular grooming (the mane is trimmed rather than left long). Standard hoof, dental and vaccination care applies. As a hardy, thrifty breed it is a classic easy keeper very prone to obesity and laminitis, so disciplined grazing management, a forage-first diet and consistent exercise are the heart of keeping a Fjord sound and healthy into old age.
