📖 Care guide
The glowlight tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) is a small characin from the Essequibo River basin of Guyana in northern South America, where it lives in soft, tannin-stained blackwater. It reaches about 4 cm and lives 4–5 years. A single glowing orange-red line runs across its otherwise translucent silver body. Glowlights are peaceful shoalers for a tank of 60 litres or more, kept in groups of six or more. Recreate their soft, acidic home at 22–28°C with a pH of 6.0–7.0, dark substrate, driftwood and dense planting. Subdued lighting and a shaded aquascape make their orange line glow most vividly. As micro-omnivores they eat fine flake, micro-pellets and small frozen foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp. Gentle and undemanding, they are excellent companions for other small, calm community fish and shrimp. Their main risks are ich and fin rot in poor or unstable water, easily prevented with a mature, well-planted tank and regular water changes.
