📖 Care guide

The goldfish (Carassius auratus) was domesticated over a thousand years ago in China from wild Prussian carp, making it one of the oldest ornamental fish. Slim single-tail types reach 20–30 cm and fancy varieties stay smaller, and a well-kept goldfish routinely lives 10–25 years. They are cool-water fish, not tropical, and should never be kept in an unheated bowl. A single fancy goldfish needs at least 75 litres, with 40–50 extra litres per additional fish, because they are heavy waste producers demanding strong filtration. Keep the water at 18–22°C with a pH of 7.0–8.0; slim commons and comets prefer ponds. They are sociable and root through substrate, so use smooth gravel and hardy plants like anubias or java fern that tolerate their grazing. Goldfish are omnivores best fed a sinking gel or pellet food supplemented with blanched peas, spinach and the occasional bloodworm. Overfeeding floating flakes causes them to gulp air, so soak or sink food to reduce swim-bladder problems, the most common fancy-goldfish ailment alongside ich and fin rot. Stable water changes and cool, oxygen-rich conditions keep them healthy for decades.
