The Harlequin Tuskfish (Choerodon fasciatus) comes from the western Pacific and reaches about 25 to 30 cm. Its blue canine teeth are genuinely blue, coloured by the mineral structure of the enamel, and they protrude visibly even when the mouth is closed. Australian specimens are widely regarded as hardier and better coloured than Indo-Pacific imports, which are usually cheaper for a reason. An adult needs 500 litres or more at 24-27C, salinity 1.024 to 1.026, pH 8.1 to 8.4, with substantial rockwork and open swimming space. Feed meaty foods: mysis, chopped prawn, clam, krill and a quality marine pellet. It is coral safe and can live in a reef, but it will eat ornamental shrimp, small crabs, snails and any fish small enough to swallow, so it is reef safe only in the coral sense. It is shy for the first weeks and then becomes one of the boldest fish in the tank, recognising its keeper and coming to the glass. Keep one per tank and choose robust, similarly sized tankmates.
