๐ Care guide
The Kenyi (Maylandia lombardoi) is endemic to Mbenji Island in Lake Malawi and reaches about 10 to 13 cm. It reverses the usual mbuna pattern: juveniles and females are pale blue with dark vertical bars, and dominant males change to a solid yellow-orange. That change happens as the male takes rank, so a tank bought as all-blue juveniles will produce a yellow tyrant within months. It needs 250 litres or more at 24-27C, pH 7.8 to 8.6 in hard water, with heavy rockwork and multiple caves. Feed spirulina-based flake, algae wafers and vegetable pellets, keeping protein low for the usual bloat reasons. The temperament is the deciding factor: a mature male kenyi is among the harshest mbuna sold and will dominate a mixed Malawi tank, so it belongs only in a large, crowded, experienced setup with a strict one male to four or more females ratio. Anyone attracted to the yellow-and-blue contrast but not to the aggression should look at saulosi instead, which offers a similar look at a far lower cost in casualties.
