The Nanday Parakeet (Aratinga nenday), also called the black-hooded parakeet, comes from the Pantanal and dry forests of central South America and is instantly known by its black face and cap over a green body. Robust and adaptable, escaped birds have established feral flocks in Florida, California and beyond; pets weigh 120-160 g and live 20-30 years. Nandays are boisterous, clever and deeply flock-oriented, calling loudly to keep contact and readily learning whistles and a few words. They are affectionate with their people but need firm, kind, consistent handling, as an under-socialised bird can become nippy; a companion of their own kind suits them well. Feed formulated pellets supplemented with vegetables, greens, sprouted seeds and limited fruit, avoiding the fatty all-seed diets linked to obesity and kidney disease. Provide a large cage, daily flight and interaction, and a constant rotation of foraging and destructible toys — these active minds sour into screaming and plucking when bored, so a busy, engaged routine is the key to a happy Nanday.
