The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient Iberian hunting dog that comes in three sizes, of which the medium (Medio) is described here, and in both smooth and wirehaired coats. Unusually, it hunts using sight, scent and hearing together, working rough ground for rabbit in packs or singly, and that combination shows in a dog that is constantly scanning, listening and investigating. As a companion the Podengo is lively, playful and affectionate with its family, alert enough to make a good watchdog, and typically reserved rather than fearful with strangers. It is an independent thinker rather than a biddable one: it learns quickly but decides for itself whether to comply, so training needs to be interesting, short and reward-based. Prey drive is strong, and a Podengo will chase, dig and climb, so fencing needs to be secure and higher than you expect. Exercise should be around an hour daily with room to run and problems to solve; scent games suit them well. The smooth coat needs only a weekly brush, the wire coat a comb and occasional hand-stripping. This is a landrace shaped by centuries of natural selection rather than a closed show pedigree, and it is correspondingly healthy, with no significant inherited disease cluster. Practical care is the ordinary kind: keep the dog lean, keep the teeth clean, keep vaccinations and parasite control current, and expect twelve to fourteen active years.
