๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The raccoon dog, or tanuki (Nyctereutes procyonoides), is an East Asian canid now also widespread in Europe. Weighing 4-10 kilograms and living seven to eleven years, it is the only dog species to fatten and enter winter dormancy. They are quiet, somewhat aloof, and less trainable than domestic dogs, retaining shy wild instincts even when hand-raised. House them in a large, secure outdoor enclosure with dig-proof fencing, dens, and enrichment; they are strong diggers and climbers. Feed a varied omnivorous diet of meat, fish, insects, fruit, and vegetables, moderating intake to prevent the heavy seasonal weight gain that predisposes them to obesity. They have a strong musky odor and shed a dense coat. Classed as an invasive species, raccoon dogs are banned across the EU and restricted in many other regions, so keeping one is legally sensitive and requires checking prohibited-species lists.
