The Indian ring-necked parakeet is a strikingly elegant bird and one of the clearest talkers in the parrot world, but it has a reputation for needing consistent effort to stay tame. Ringnecks bond and learn quickly, yet they will drift back toward wildness if handling lapses, and they famously go through a 'bluffing' adolescent phase of nippiness that patient, steady interaction gets you through. Their long tails mean they need a tall, spacious cage or flight, plenty of out-of-cage time, and lots of toys and foraging over a 25–30 year life. (They are also the birds behind the feral parakeet flocks seen in Israel and many cities worldwide.) Diet is mostly pellets and fresh vegetables, avoiding an all-seed diet that leads to obesity and vitamin deficiency. Watch for feather plucking, respiratory and fungal disease, and the beak-and-feather disease parrots can carry, and keep the air free of the non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke that are lethal to birds.
