The Rusty Cichlid (Iodotropheus sprengerae) comes from the Boadzulu and Chinyankwazi island area of Lake Malawi and reaches about 10 to 11 cm. Both sexes share the same lavender-to-rust colouring, with males deeper and glossier when in condition, so this is not a species where the females are drab. It grazes aufwuchs like other mbuna and breeds readily as a mouthbrooder. A colony of one male and three or four females is comfortable in 200 litres at 24-27C, pH 7.8 to 8.6 in hard water, over rock with caves. Feed spirulina flake, algae wafers and vegetable pellets, protein occasional. What sets it apart is temperament: it is consistently rated the most peaceful widely available mbuna, holds a territory without patrolling half the tank, and rarely inflicts real damage. That makes it the species to start with when learning Malawi cichlids, and a useful buffer in a tank of pushier mbuna. It still must not be kept with tetras, guppies or other community fish, and it will hybridise with related mbuna, so a single Iodotropheus species per tank is the rule.
