๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The giant African land snail is a calm, oddly therapeutic pet, but the first thing to know is legal: it is a serious invasive species and is banned outright in many places, including across the United States, so check your local law before ever acquiring one. Where legal, it needs a warm, humid terrarium with several centimetres of coir or soil to burrow into, misted daily to keep humidity high, and kept out of direct sun or draughts. Diet centres on calcium for that ever-growing shell: fresh leafy greens and vegetables plus a constant source of calcium such as cuttlebone, which they will rasp at to keep the shell strong and crack-free. Avoid anything salty, which is harmful to them. A few care essentials protect both snail and keeper. Keep the substrate clean and moist to prevent shell rot and dehydration, handle gently with damp hands supporting the shell, and be aware they are prolific hermaphrodites that can lay hundreds of eggs โ€” never release them or their eggs into the wild. Because the species can carry rat lungworm, always wash your hands after handling the snail or its enclosure.
