Widespread through the rainforests of Southeast Asia, the tokay gecko is one of the largest true geckos at 25-35 cm and lives 10-15 years. It is powerfully built, strongly territorial, and famous for a tenacious bite, so it suits keepers who value watching over handling. Wild-caught imports are common but captive-bred and designer morphs are increasingly available and far calmer. House singly in a tall, humid, heavily planted 60x45x90 cm terrarium with abundant vertical cork bark and hides. Provide a warm gradient of 27-32 C, a nighttime drop, and low-level UVB. Maintain high humidity of 60-80% with daily misting and good ventilation to prevent respiratory issues. Feed large gut-loaded insects such as crickets, roaches, and locusts, with the occasional pink mouse for adults, all dusted with calcium and D3. Minimize handling to reduce stress and bites.
