The western hognose ranges across the central plains of North America, from Canada into Mexico, burrowing through loose, sandy soils in search of amphibians and rodents. Females grow larger, reaching 0.5 to 0.9 meters, while males stay smaller; both are lightweight and live 15 to 20 years. Their upturned snout is a purpose-built digging tool, and their harmless bluffing displays make them endearing. House a hognose in a secure 40-75 liter enclosure with several centimeters of dry, diggable substrate. Provide a warm side around 30-32C and a cool end in the low 20s, with low humidity near 30-50%. These are rear-fanged, mildly venomous snakes, but their venom is harmless to humans and bites are rare. Feed frozen-thawed mice every five to seven days, watching closely for obesity. They handle readily and rarely strike.
