The Bichon Frise is a cheerful, affectionate powder-puff of a dog that seems to love the entire world — playful, gentle and sociable with everyone, it makes a wonderful family and apartment companion. Bred purely for companionship, it thrives on being with its people and does not like being left alone, so it suits a home where someone is usually around. Bright and eager to please, it trains easily with positive methods, though housetraining can take patience. Its famous joyful 'blitz' sprints around the house are a daily celebration of life. The curly white low-shedding coat is often tolerated better by allergy sufferers but is high-maintenance: it mats easily and needs brushing every day or two plus professional grooming every four to six weeks, with tear-stain cleaning around the eyes. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens for the breed's tendencies: allergies and skin problems, patellar luxation, bladder and kidney stones (so plenty of water and prompt attention to urinary signs help), and dental disease common to small dogs. Keep up grooming, dental care, a lean weight and companionship, and a Bichon Frise will be a joyful, devoted little companion for fourteen to fifteen years.
