The boesemani rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) is native to the Ayamaru Lakes region of the Bird's Head Peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia, where it is now endangered in the wild. It grows to about 10–11 cm and lives 5–8 years. Mature males show a striking two-tone body, steel-blue at the front grading to fiery orange at the rear. Boesemani are active, schooling fish that need a tank of 200 litres or more with plenty of length, kept in a group of six or more. Coming from hard, alkaline lakes, they thrive at 25–30°C with a pH of 7.0–8.0. Provide open swimming space with plants along the back and sides, and bright lighting to bring out their full colour, which develops fully only in adults. They are omnivores that eat flake, pellets, and frozen or live foods with gusto. Peaceful and lively, they suit spacious community tanks with other active, robust species, though males display and 'spar' harmlessly for dominance. Hardy overall, their main risks are ich and fin rot from poor water; a large, well-filtered tank with stable, hard water keeps them shimmering and healthy.
