The bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a small suckermouth catfish from the rivers and streams of the Amazon basin in South America. Unlike the common pleco it stays a manageable 10–15 cm and lives 5–12 years. Mature males grow a striking cluster of fleshy tentacles, or bristles, on the snout that give the fish its name. A bristlenose suits a tank of 110 litres or more at 23–27°C with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Driftwood is essential, since they rasp on it for fibre and use it as shelter, and they are nocturnal, so provide caves and shaded spots. Being far smaller than common plecos, they are practical algae-eaters for real home aquariums. They are herbivore-leaning omnivores that need algae wafers and blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber and spinach, plus the driftwood they graze — tank algae alone is not enough. Peaceful and undemanding, they coexist with almost any community fish, though males can be territorial with each other. Their main risks are malnutrition, skin damage and ich, all prevented by a proper vegetable diet, driftwood and clean water.
