The Chinese Crested is a small, affectionate, playful companion that comes in two varieties from the same litters: the famous Hairless, with tufts on head, feet and tail, and the fully coated 'Powderpuff'. Either way it is a devoted lap dog that bonds intensely and dislikes being left alone, thriving on constant closeness and gentle handling. Its exercise needs are modest, making it a great apartment companion, though it is sensitive and does best with kind, positive training and calm surroundings. Coat care differs by type: the Powderpuff's soft double coat needs regular brushing to prevent matting, while the Hairless needs skin care instead — sunscreen against sunburn, protection from cold with sweaters, and gentle washing to manage the acne and blackheads bare skin is prone to. Health-wise, the Hairless variety is notably prone to dental problems (missing or poor teeth linked to the hairless gene), so diligent dental care is essential. Also buy from a breeder who screens eyes and knees, and watch for patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, Legg-Calvé-Perthes hip disease and skin conditions. Protect its skin and teeth, keep it warm and close, and a Chinese Crested will be a devoted, quirky companion for thirteen to eighteen years.
