The Dachshund is a bold, funny, surprisingly fierce little hound bred to go to ground after badgers, and that hunting heart makes it brave, stubborn and devoted. It bonds closely with its family, often to one person, and while it is playful and entertaining, the terrier-like independence means patient, consistent, reward-based training — housetraining in particular can test you. It needs daily walks and sniffing time to satisfy its scenting instincts. The coat comes in smooth, long and wire varieties with grooming needs to match, from a weekly brush to regular stripping. The defining health concern is the long back: the Dachshund's elongated spine makes it highly prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which can cause pain or paralysis. Protect the back by preventing jumping on and off furniture, using ramps, discouraging stair-climbing and, above all, keeping the dog slim, since excess weight dramatically raises the risk. Also watch for dental disease and patellar luxation. Guard that back, keep it lean and active, keep up dental care, and a Dachshund will be a comical, courageous companion for twelve to sixteen years.
