The dairy cow is a striking colour form of Porcellio laevis, a widespread terrestrial isopod prized as a cleanup crew and captive-bred colony pet. Reaching about 2 cm, individuals live one to three years, but a colony is effectively self-sustaining, reproducing rapidly and forming the living janitorial staff of bioactive terrariums. Keep a colony in a ventilated tub with moist substrate, abundant hardwood leaf litter, rotting wood, and a cuttlebone or other calcium source for their frequent molts. Maintain a moisture gradient with one damp end and one drier end, at room temperature 20-26C. Feed decaying leaves supplemented with vegetables and a regular protein source such as fish flakes, which prevents the cannibalistic nibbling that low-protein colonies show. They need no handling to thrive, though they are harmless if scooped up. Good ventilation prevents the mould and stagnation that stall a colony.
