The Fighting Conch (Strombus alatus from Florida, and the similar Conomurex luhuanus from the Indo-Pacific) reaches about 7 to 10 cm of shell length. Its name comes from the way males shove each other with the operculum, a claw-like plate on the foot, rather than from any aggression towards other animals. It moves in a distinctive hopping lurch, pushing off with that same operculum. A single conch suits 150 litres or more at 24-27C, salinity 1.024 to 1.026, pH 8.1 to 8.4, and it needs a real sand bed of at least 5 cm, ideally more, since it burrows and feeds by sifting. It eats detritus, diatoms and algae film from the sand, keeping the surface turned over and clean in a way that snails do not. The main practical point is stocking density: one conch per 150 to 200 litres, because in a clean tank they exhaust the food supply and starve, which is a slow and easily missed failure. Supplement with sinking algae pellets in a low-detritus system.
