The Mongolian gerbil comes from the deserts and steppes of Mongolia and northern China, and everything about its care follows from that: it is a diurnal, water-thrifty, burrowing social animal. Gerbils must live in same-sex pairs or small groups (a lone gerbil suffers), are active in the day rather than only at night, and rarely bite — an excellent, hardy first small pet at 50–100 g and 3–5 years. The single most important thing you can provide is DEPTH of substrate: 20–30 cm of paper-and-hay or aspen mix so they can dig and hold the real tunnel systems they build. A tall tank or a deep-based cage beats a shallow wire cage every time. Add a sand bath, a solid wheel, and hard things to gnaw — their incisors never stop growing. Feed a gerbil or hamster seed mix (sunflower seeds are a treat, not a staple, to avoid obesity), a little fresh vegetable, and the occasional mealworm. Being desert animals they drink little and their dry droppings make them one of the least smelly pets. Health watch-list: incisor and molar overgrowth, tail-slip if ever picked up by the tail (never do this), and a genetic tendency to seizures in some lines — usually brief and harmless.
