Pygmy goats are playful, hardy and endlessly entertaining, but the first rule is non-negotiable: they are herd animals and must never be kept alone — a lone goat is a miserable, noisy goat, so plan for at least two. They are agile climbers and determined escape artists, so they need sturdy, tall fencing, climbing structures and rocks to play on, plus a dry draught-free shelter. As browsers rather than grazers, they prefer good grass hay and safe browse over rich grain. Diet is where most health trouble starts. Too much grain unbalances the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio and causes painful, sometimes fatal urinary stones, especially in neutered males, so keep grain minimal, provide the right minerals and always fresh water. Overfeeding also brings obesity and bloat. Routine care is real livestock care: hooves need trimming every few weeks, worming and the FAMACHA anemia check keep internal parasites (a leading killer) in check, and a CDT vaccine protects against tetanus and enterotoxaemia. Learn a goat's normal cud-chewing, appetite and droppings so you catch bloat, parasites or illness early, and keep a livestock vet on call.
