The Praying Mantis is a group of ambush-hunting insects kept as fascinating single-specimen pets, named for the folded 'praying' posture of their spined forelegs. Popular species such as the Chinese, Ghost and Orchid mantises range from a few centimetres to over 10 cm, and most live only about a year, with females generally longer-lived than males. Mantises are solitary and cannibalistic, so each must be housed alone. They are surprisingly interactive for an insect, tracking movement with a swivelling head and often calmly climbing onto a hand, though they are delicate and are best mostly observed. Their lives are short but their whole dramatic life cycle — hunting, moulting and, for females, producing foamy egg cases — plays out in the enclosure. House one in a small, well-ventilated enclosure at least three times its body length tall, since mantises moult by hanging upside down and a fall during moulting is often fatal. Provide gentle warmth and light misting for humidity appropriate to the species, and feed live insects such as fruit flies for tiny nymphs up to crickets and flies for adults, sized smaller than the mantis. The critical care point is the moult: keep humidity right, never disturb a moulting mantis, and remove uneaten prey that could injure it.
