The Gordon Setter is the black-and-tan Scot of the setter family — bigger, steadier and more devoted to one family than its Irish and English cousins. Intelligent, loyal and dignified, it works hard and tirelessly in the field and then shadows its people closely at home, forming a deep bond and disliking being left alone. It has serious sporting stamina and needs substantial daily exercise plus mental engagement, and while it is trainable, it can be a little sensitive and strong-willed, so it responds best to patient, positive, consistent handling and early socialisation. The long, feathered black-and-tan coat needs brushing a couple of times a week to prevent mats, with attention to the drop ears. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips and eyes, and be aware of the breed's tendencies: hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and bloat and gastric torsion — a serious risk in this deep-chested breed, so feed measured meals from a raised bowl and rest after eating. Give a Gordon Setter plenty of exercise, patient training and close family company, guard against bloat, and this handsome, devoted setter will be a loyal companion for twelve to thirteen years.
