The kuhli loach (Pangio kuhlii) is a slender, eel-shaped loach from the forest streams and leaf-littered waters of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra, Borneo, Java and the Malay Peninsula. It grows to about 8–10 cm and can live up to 10 years. Its banded, worm-like body lets it burrow and slip through tight spaces. Kuhlis are social and shy, best kept in groups of six or more in a tank of 75 litres or more at 24–28°C with a pH of 5.5–7.0. A soft sand substrate is essential, since they love to burrow and sharp gravel injures them; add driftwood, plants and caves for the daytime hiding they rely on. Being nocturnal, they emerge mostly after lights-out. They are bottom-feeding omnivores that scavenge sinking pellets, wafers, and frozen or live foods like bloodworm from the substrate. Peaceful with all calm community fish, they should not be housed with aggressive tankmates. As scaleless fish they are sensitive to medications and poor water, and are prone to ich; use half-dose treatments, soft substrate and clean, stable water to keep them healthy.
