The Leonberger is a magnificent lion-maned giant, developed in Germany as a gentle, versatile family and working dog — part guardian, part therapist, famously patient and gentle with children. Despite its imposing size it is calm, friendly, playful and deeply devoted, and it wants to be an involved indoor member of the family rather than a yard dog. It is moderately active, needing regular exercise and mental engagement plus early socialisation and gentle, positive training while it is still a manageable size; puppies must not be over-exercised while their huge frames grow. It bonds closely and dislikes being left alone. The thick, water-resistant double coat sheds heavily and 'blows' seasonally, needing brushing several times a week, and the breed much prefers cool weather. As a giant breed the Leonberger has a short lifespan of around seven to nine years and serious health risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips, elbows and hearts, and be aware of hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy), an above-average cancer risk, a breed-specific neuropathy (LPN, DNA-testable), and bloat (feed measured meals from a raised bowl and rest after eating). Give a Leonberger family inclusion, exercise, gentle training and vigilant health care, avoid over-exercising the puppy, and this gentle giant will return immense love in its precious years.
