Famous from Vienna's Spanish Riding School, the Lipizzaner is a baroque horse of Spanish, Arabian and Italian ancestry, developed over 400 years for the demanding classical dressage movements known as the 'airs above the ground'. Foals are born bay or black and slowly grey to the iconic white by around six to ten years of age. Intelligent, brave and remarkably patient, Lipizzaners mature and train slowly by design, reaching full classical work only in their later years — but that patience and longevity means they often perform into their twenties. They are calm, willing and strongly bonded to their riders, rewarding methodical, relationship-based training. The long white mane and tail take dedicated grooming (and white coats show every stain), while hoof, dental and vaccination care are standard. The breed is hardy and long-lived with few signature diseases, but as an easy keeper it needs weight and grazing management to prevent obesity-driven laminitis, plus the steady forage routine that guards every horse against colic.
