The Mustang is not a breed so much as a population — the free-roaming feral horses of the western United States, descended mainly from horses brought by the Spanish. Generations of natural selection on open range have produced an exceptionally hardy, sure-footed, intelligent horse with strong survival instincts, tough feet and remarkable stamina. Many Mustangs are adopted through public gentling programs from wild herds, so they can bond deeply with a patient handler but need experienced, trust-based training — an untamed Mustang is a job for a knowledgeable trainer, while a gentled one makes a versatile, resilient trail and sport partner. They are independent and alert by nature, thriving with clear leadership and daily engagement. Range-bred toughness means Mustangs are usually low-maintenance and easy keepers, needing little in the way of grooming beyond routine care — but that thrifty metabolism makes managed grazing important to prevent laminitis on rich pasture. Their hard 'mustang feet' often go barefoot successfully; keep up dental floating, vaccination and a steady forage routine to guard against colic.
