The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a big herding dog in a short-legged body, and it has the brains, energy and bossiness to match its cattle-driving heritage. Clever, alert and playful, it is far more active than its cute looks suggest and needs real daily exercise and mental work, or it turns its intelligence to barking, nipping heels (a herding instinct to train early) and mischief. It is a wonderful, affectionate family dog for owners who engage its mind. The thick double coat sheds a great deal, so expect regular brushing and a lot of hair, stepping up during heavy seasonal moults. The key health concern mirrors the Dachshund's: those long-backed, short legs make Corgis prone to intervertebral disc disease, so prevent jumping on and off furniture, use ramps, and above all keep the dog lean, since obesity greatly increases back and joint strain and the breed loves to eat. Also screen for hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. Keep a Corgi exercised, mentally busy, slim and back-protected, and it will be a bright, devoted and hilarious companion for twelve to thirteen years.
