Named for its unbeatable speed over a quarter-mile, the Quarter Horse became the cowboy's partner and is now the world's most numerous breed. Its greatest asset is temperament: calm, sensible, willing and forgiving, which makes it the classic first horse and a favorite for ranch work, western sports, trail riding and beginners alike. Hardy and adaptable, it still needs daily turnout and regular work to stay fit and happy — the same easygoing appetite that makes it low-maintenance also makes it prone to obesity, so match feed to workload and keep grazing managed. Its people-friendly nature responds beautifully to consistent, reward-based handling. Grooming is straightforward with a short coat and a weekly-plus routine, but the breed carries several inherited muscle and metabolic conditions (HYPP, PSSM, GBED, MH) concentrated in specific bloodlines — buy from a breeder who DNA-tests and discloses results. Otherwise the usual equine essentials apply: routine farriery, annual dental floating, vaccination and a forage-first, laminitis-aware diet.
