Developed by the Nez Perce people of the American Northwest, the Appaloosa is prized for endurance, sure-footedness and a sensible, loyal nature. Beyond the spotted coat, its identity markers are white sclera around the eye, mottled skin and vertically striped hooves. It is a versatile all-rounder at home on the trail, in western events and in the arena. Hardy and level-headed, it suits a wide range of riders and thrives on regular work and turnout. Its intelligence and loyalty reward patient, consistent handling, and it copes well with varied terrain and weather thanks to its mountain-bred heritage. Grooming is simple, but the breed's white sclera and pink skin warrant sun protection. The one health point to know is that Appaloosas have a markedly higher risk of Equine Recurrent Uveitis ('moon blindness'), a painful inflammatory eye disease that can lead to cataracts and vision loss — so any squinting, tearing or cloudiness needs prompt veterinary attention. Otherwise the standard program of farriery, dental care, vaccination and forage-first feeding keeps them sound.
