Bred in Scotland's Clyde valley to haul coal and plough heavy land, the Clydesdale is a gentle giant — often standing well over 17 hands — with silky white leg 'feathering' and the calm, patient, willing temperament of the classic heavy horse. Their good nature and striking looks make them beloved parade and carriage horses today. Despite the size they are people-oriented and easy to handle, but they are powerful animals that need knowledgeable management, sturdy facilities and daily turnout. They work steadily rather than fast, and their calm minds suit driving, riding and gentle all-round work. The heavy leg feathering is the main care commitment: it must be kept clean and dry to prevent 'scratches' and chronic progressive lymphedema, a serious skin/swelling disease drafts are prone to. Big feet mean big farrier bills and vigilance against laminitis, joints carry heavy loads so arthritis is common with age, and drafts can be sensitive to certain drugs — a horse vet experienced with heavy breeds is worth having.
