From the rocky, storm-lashed west of Ireland, the Connemara is the country's only native pony breed and one of the finest performance ponies anywhere — hardy and sure-footed from its mountain origins, yet athletic, with a natural jump and enough size and substance to carry teenagers and lighter adults. Its gentle, sensible, willing temperament makes it a treasured family pony. Intelligent and brave, Connemaras shine in jumping, eventing, dressage and driving and are frequently crossed with Thoroughbreds to produce top junior sport horses. They are kind and adaptable, thriving on varied work, turnout and a fair, consistent partnership. Grooming is moderate, and standard hoof, dental and vaccination care applies. As a native pony it is an easy keeper prone to obesity and laminitis on rich grazing, so managed pasture and regular exercise are key. The breed also carries a specific inherited disorder (hoof wall separation disease, HWSD), so responsible breeders DNA-test — worth confirming when buying a Connemara foal.
