Once the mount of medieval Dutch knights, the Friesian is a majestic baroque horse: uniformly black, with a long wavy mane, feathered lower legs and high, elegant action that makes it a star in dressage and driving. Beneath the drama is a gentle, calm, deeply loyal 'gentle giant' that bonds closely with its people. Its willing, sensitive nature makes it trainable and affectionate, but it needs consistent work and turnout to stay fit and content. The powerful build and showy movement suit dressage, carriage driving and exhibition, and its friendly temperament makes it more forgiving than many hot breeds. Grooming is a real commitment — the heavy mane, tail and leg feathering need frequent attention, and the feathers must be kept clean and dry to prevent skin conditions like 'scratches' (pastern dermatitis). Crucially, the Friesian's small founding gene pool concentrates several inherited problems (dwarfism, hydrocephalus, a tendency to colic and aortic rupture) and its lifespan is shorter than most breeds' — buy only from a health-focused breeder, and keep a diligent colic-prevention and veterinary routine.
