The Mini Rex was developed in Texas in the 1980s by miniaturizing the French Rex, whose mutation shortens the guard hairs to the length of the undercoat — the result is the famous velvet plush. Adults weigh 1.4–2 kg and typically live 7–10 years. The rex coat is self-maintaining: over-brushing actually damages it, so a weekly once-over with damp hands is enough. The trade-off is thinner fur on the footpads, making soft flooring important to prevent sore hocks. Otherwise standard rabbit housing applies — a large pen or free-roam, litter box, chew protection and ideally a neutered companion. Feed unlimited grass hay with daily leafy greens and a small measured pellet ration. The Mini Rex's laid-back temperament makes it one of the best first rabbits for gentle households; keep the usual rabbit health watch — continuously growing teeth, GI stasis if eating stops, and weight creep on this compact frame.
